As we started developing the idea of helping our fellow artists to get known, we started to think about what was really helpful. We then came up with the idea that no matter what you post, where you post it, how you post it or even who your target market is, it should always have value. Many of you might be saying, “What the Frak does that mean??” Let us tell you.

Having value refers to the resulting product having a point. The actual definition of “value” as defined on Wikipedia is “In philosophy, value is a property of objects, including physical objects as well as abstract objects (e.g. actions), representing their degree of importance”. Therefore when we say that your expression must have value, it means that most people encountering your expression should be interested and find importance. It’s fairly straight forward really. You want to Get Known. Then put out quality expressions. Don’t forget value can go the opposite way as well, Google defines one aspect of value as “the quality (positive or negative) that renders something desirable or valuable” Remember we at Music-Is-Life are working in the online video world. So we will always try to put our posts in context of BEING seen and not just heard.

Take a look at the following videos, one has value and the other sadly does not. Can you see the difference?

–>Video 1 (changed to 480p quality)<--

–>Video 2<--

Both videos offer similar content. They both show music video (as what we would imagine you are working with), they both feature catchy tunes and they both feature interesting concepts. Video 1 however is shot in higher definition, excellent audio and clear lighting. Video 2 on the other hand features none of these things. So which has more value? Of course it is pretty “eye of the beholder-eske” but we will go with Video 1. Well which are you more attracted to? (of course they are in different settings and have different budgets but you get the point)

Anyhoo here is a list of things that we want to suggest as items that can add value to your expressions. Of course this isn’t everything but it’s a good start. We understand that not everyone has the money nor the time for professional looking videos so each of these tips can be done cheaply and still have the desired effect.

1. Record the video in the high possible video quality.
With many of the video posting sites now starting to offer High Def quality videos, it makes the most sense to record your video in the best possible quality. It’s always easier to decrease quality for a site than increase it!

2. Record the video in the highest possible sound quality
We are talking about expressing your talents. Whether you are a DJ, a Solo artist or even a band, people have to hear you to like you. So it really is common sense to use better quality recording software or even a better mic.

3. Record the video with good lighting.
I’m always saying this; poor lighting will be the “Epic Fail” of your video if you don’t pay attention to it. You don’t want too much light where everything is washed out, and you don’t want too little light were no one can see anything. We understand mood lighting but there is a limit!

4. Use a stand, table, shelf or sturdy box
Unless you are going for a “Blair Witch” or “Cloverfield” style of filmography, stick to someone that has steady hands, or better yet, just stick the camera on a table or shelf. There’s nothing worse than a non-necessary shaky video.

5. Invite Friends and Family to view and honestly critique it
We have seen to many artists who think they are great because of false platitudes given to them by friends and family. We are sure that you know someone that shouldn’t sing but still does heh. Feedback and honest feedback will be the only way you get to hone your talents. Always listen, learn and practice.

6. Remember it’s a whole package!
Important! Each of these ideas and suggestions listed here are suppose to work together not alone. It’s a total package you are showing. A supremely beautiful video is nothing if the sounds can’t be heard. As well as a great song or mix won’t be anything if you have it in video form and the video sucks. Always think complete package.

7. Don’t be discouraged
If at first your expression doesn’t get the desired responses, hits or ratings, don’t worry. It really is a longer process than one might imagine. Trust us, it generally doesn’t happen over night.

And as always feel free to post comments about what might have helped you too!
